Concerned About a Mole? Here's What You Should Know

Should I Get My Mole Checked?

Have you noticed a mole that's changed, or discovered a new skin lesion and wondered whether you should get it checked? You're certainly not alone.

Many people have moles, freckles and other skin lesions that are completely harmless. However, if you notice something that's new, changing or simply doesn't look quite right, it's always worth having it checked professionally.

At Jax-Glam Beauty, I offer Mole Mapping & Skin Lesion Screening using the Map My Mole teledermatology service. High-quality dermatoscope images are securely reviewed by a UK Consultant Dermatologist, giving you expert advice without the worry of trying to work it out yourself.

What Changes Should I Look For?

Most moles are harmless and remain unchanged for years.

It's worth arranging a professional review if you notice:

  • A new mole appearing in adulthood
  • A mole changing in size
  • A change in shape or an uneven outline
  • More than one colour developing
  • Itching, bleeding or crusting
  • A lesion that simply looks different from your other moles

A useful guide used by healthcare professionals is the ABCDE rule.

A – Asymmetry

One half of the mole doesn't match the other.

B – Border

The edges become uneven, ragged or blurred.

C – Colour

More than one colour develops within the same mole.

D – Diameter

The mole becomes noticeably larger, particularly if it's continuing to grow.

E – Evolving

Any recent change in size, colour, shape or symptoms such as itching or bleeding.

If you notice any of these changes, it's sensible to have the lesion professionally assessed.

Can You Tell Just By Looking?

Unfortunately, no.

Many harmless skin lesions can look worrying, while some skin cancers can appear quite subtle.

This is why healthcare professionals use a dermatoscope — a specialist magnifying camera that allows detailed examination beneath the surface of the skin.

The images are then assessed by experienced Consultant Dermatologists who look for features that simply aren't visible to the naked eye.

What Is Mole Mapping?

YMole Mapping is a simple, non-invasive skin screening service designed to provide reassurance and help identify whether a mole or skin lesion may need further medical investigation.

During your appointment I'll take detailed dermatoscope images of your mole or skin lesion.

These images are securely submitted through the Map My Mole platform for review by a UK Consultant Dermatologist.

You'll normally receive your written digital report within 24–48 hours.

What Can Be Checked?

This service is suitable for many common skin lesions, including:

  • Moles
  • Pigmented skin lesions
  • New skin lesions
  • Lesions that have recently changed
  • Any lesion you'd simply like professionally reviewed

If you're unsure whether your lesion is suitable, feel free to get in touch before booking.

What Happens During My Appointment?

Appointments take approximately 20 minutes and include:

✔ Discussion of your concerns

✔ Skin assessment

✔ High-quality dermatoscope imaging

✔ Secure submission through Map My Mole

✔ Review by a UK Consultant Dermatologist

✔ Your written digital report emailed directly to you

If you have more than one mole or lesion you'd like assessed, additional lesions can be submitted during the same appointment.

What Happens After My Report?

Your dermatologist report will normally recommend one of three outcomes:

✔ No further action required

Your lesion appears benign and doesn't require any further investigation.

✔ Continue monitoring

The dermatologist may recommend keeping an eye on the lesion and seeking another review if anything changes.

✔ Visit your GP

If further investigation is recommended, you'll be advised to arrange an appointment with your GP or dermatologist.

This doesn't necessarily mean anything serious has been found—it simply means the dermatologist would like the lesion assessed further.

Is This a Diagnosis?

No. This service provides a professional Consultant Dermatologist review, but it isn't a replacement for your GP or emergency medical services.  If further assessment is recommended, you'll simply be advised on the most appropriate next step.

Can The Mole Be Removed?

If a lesion has been professionally confirmed as suitable for cosmetic treatment, I also offer Cryotherapy Lesion Removal for many common benign skin lesions including:

  • Skin tags
  • Cherry angiomas (red spots)
  • Milia
  • Warts
  • Verrucae

Pigmented lesions and moles should only be removed following appropriate medical advice where required.

Mole Mapping & Skin Lesion Screening FAQ

  • How quickly will I receive my results?

Most reports are returned within 24–48 hours, although occasionally they may take slightly longer depending on demand.

  • Does this replace seeing my GP?

No. Mole Mapping & Skin Lesion Screening is designed to provide quick access to a dermatologist review. If your report recommends further investigation, you'll be advised to see your GP or dermatologist.

  • Does it hurt?

Not at all. The appointment is completely non-invasive.

A dermatoscope is gently placed against your skin to take detailed, magnified images of your mole or skin lesion. There are no needles, no cutting and no treatment during this appointment—just high-quality imaging and professional assessment.

  • Can you check more than one mole or skin lesion?

    Yes.

Your appointment includes one mole or skin lesion. If you have additional moles or lesions you'd like reviewed during the same appointment, they can usually be submitted for £25 each.

If you have a larger number of lesions you're concerned about, please get in touch before booking so I can advise on the most suitable appointment.

  • How long does the appointment take?

Most appointments take around 20 minutes.

This includes your consultation, dermatoscope imaging and secure submission of your images to the Map My Mole dermatology service.

  • Will I receive my results on the same day?

    Usually not.

Once your images have been securely submitted, they're reviewed by a UK Consultant Dermatologist.

Most digital reports are returned within 24–48 hours, although this can occasionally take a little longer during busy periods.

I'll send your report to you as soon as it's received.

  • Can I book during my lunch break?

    Absolutely.

The appointment takes around 20 minutes, making it ideal if you're looking for a quick professional skin check without taking too much time out of your day.

There is also free parking directly outside the salon, making your visit as convenient as possible.

  • What if my report recommends I see my GP?

If the dermatologist recommends further investigation, you'll be advised to make an appointment with your GP or dermatologist.

This doesn't necessarily mean there's anything serious, but it does mean the dermatologist would like the lesion assessed further or monitored.

If appropriate, your GP can arrange any additional investigations or treatment.

  • Can you remove the lesion at the same appointment?

    Sometimes—but not always.

If you're booking because you'd like a common benign lesion (such as a skin tag, cherry angioma, milia, wart or verruca) removed, Cryotherapy Lesion Removal may be appropriate.

However, if your lesion requires dermatologist review first, or if there is any uncertainty about its nature, it should be professionally assessed before any removal is considered.

Your safety will always come first.

  • What skin lesions can be checked?

This service is suitable for many types of skin lesions, including:

    Moles

    Pigmented lesions

    New or changing skin lesions

Lesions that have changed in size, shape or colour

    Lesions you're simply unsure about

If you're unsure whether your lesion is suitable, feel free to get in touch before booking.

  • Is this a medical diagnosis?

    No.

Your images are reviewed by a UK Consultant Dermatologist, who provides a professional opinion and written report based on the information submitted.

If further investigation is recommended, you'll be advised to see your GP or dermatologist for any additional assessment or treatment.

  • Why wouldn't I just see my GP?

If you're concerned about a mole or skin lesion, you should always contact your GP if it's urgent or changing rapidly.

Many clients choose Mole & Skin Lesion Screening because it offers a convenient way to obtain a consultant dermatologist's review, with reports typically returned within 24–48 hours.

It can provide reassurance or help you decide whether further medical assessment is recommended.

  • Why choose Jax-Glam Beauty?

You'll receive a private, one-to-one appointment in a relaxed, welcoming salon environment.

Using professional dermatoscope imaging and the trusted Map My Mole teledermatology platform, your images are securely reviewed by a UK Consultant Dermatologist, giving you expert advice and peace of mind without needing to navigate the process on your own.
