Cryotherapy for Skin Tags & Benign Skin Lesions – Does It Really Work?

Is that little skin tag starting to annoy you?

Skin tags, red spots, milia and other harmless skin lesions often become more noticeable as we get older.

While they're usually completely harmless, they can catch on jewellery or clothing, affect your confidence, or simply become something you're tired of seeing.

The good news is that many common benign skin lesions can be treated quickly and effectively using professional Cryotherapy.

What exactly is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy uses a very cold jet of nitrous oxide to freeze unwanted tissue.
The frozen cells gradually break down over the following days and weeks, allowing healthy new skin to replace them.
Most treatments take only a few seconds.

Why is it so effective?

Unlike many home freezing kits, professional Cryotherapy reaches much lower temperatures, allowing the unwanted cells to freeze more effectively.
The CryoIQ device uses nitrous oxide to create a rapid freeze that penetrates the tissue quickly while minimising damage to surrounding healthy skin.

Which skin lesions can be treated?

Age Spots (Solar Lentigines)

Flat brown patches that often appear after years of sun exposure. They're harmless but can look similar to moles, so many people choose to have them checked before removal.

Warts & Verrucae

Small, rough growths caused by a common virus. Cryotherapy freezes the affected skin, allowing healthy skin to replace it as it heals.

Milia

Tiny white bumps that form when dead skin becomes trapped beneath the surface. They're most commonly found around the eyes, cheeks and forehead.

Skin Tags

Small, soft pieces of harmless skin that often appear on the neck, underarms or eyelids. Many people choose to remove them because they catch on clothing or jewellery.

Cherry Angiomas

Small bright red or purple spots made up of tiny blood vessels. They're very common, especially as we get older, and are often removed for cosmetic reasons.

Seborrhoeic Keratoses

Common, harmless skin growths that often appear with age. They can look waxy, rough or slightly raised and range in colour from light brown to almost black.

Does it hurt?

Clients usually describe Cryotherapy as:

• A very cold sensation

• Mild stinging or tingling

• Occasionally feeling like an elastic band flicking the skin

The sensation only lasts a few seconds while the lesion is being treated, and most clients find it very tolerable. No injections or local anaesthetic are usually required.

Are There Any Risks?

Cryotherapy is a very safe treatment when carried out on suitable benign skin lesions by a trained professional.

As with any treatment, temporary side effects can occur, including:

• Redness

• Mild swelling

• Blistering

• A small scab forming

• Temporary lightening or darkening of the skin

These are all part of the normal healing process and will be fully explained during your consultation.

Is It Safe?

Yes—when used appropriately on suitable benign skin lesions.

Your safety always comes first. If there is any uncertainty about the nature of a lesion, I will recommend Mole Mapping & Skin Lesion Screening or referral to your GP before carrying out Cryotherapy.

I never treat suspicious skin lesions.

Who Is Cryotherapy Suitable For?

Cryotherapy is suitable for many adults who wish to remove common benign skin lesions for comfort or cosmetic reasons.

It is commonly used to treat:

• Skin tags that catch on clothing or jewellery

• Cherry angiomas (red spots)

• Milia

• Age spots (solar lentigines)

• Seborrhoeic keratoses

• Warts

• Verrucae

If you're unsure whether your lesion is suitable, simply get in touch before booking and I'll be happy to advise.

Cryotherapy FAQs

  • What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a treatment that uses controlled freezing technology to safely remove unwanted benign skin lesions such as skin tags, milia, cherry angiomas and pigmentation.

The extreme cold causes the targeted tissue to break down naturally while minimising damage to the surrounding skin.

  • What skin concerns can be treated?

    Cryotherapy may be suitable for:

    Skin Tags

    Milia

    Cherry Angiomas (red spots)

    Age Spots / Sun Damage

    Seborrhoeic Keratosis

    Warts & Verrucae

    Some benign pigmented lesions*

*Certain lesions may require medical screening before treatment.

  • How Long Does Healing Take?

Healing varies depending on the type and size of the lesion, but a typical timeline is:

Immediately after treatment: The area may look white, then become slightly red.

Days 1–7: A blister or small scab may develop. This is completely normal.

Weeks 2–4: The lesion gradually dries up and falls away.

Weeks 4–6: Healthy new skin continues to develop beneath. Some areas may remain slightly lighter than the surrounding skin for a little longer before blending naturally.

  • Does Cryotherapy hurt?

Most clients describe the sensation as:

    Cold

    Sharp

    Tingly

Mildly uncomfortable for a few seconds

Treatment is very quick and discomfort usually settles rapidly afterwards.

  • How long does treatment take?

Most appointments take around 15–30 minutes depending on:

    The type of lesion

    The size

    The number of areas treated

The actual freezing treatment itself usually only lasts a few seconds per lesion.

  • What happens after treatment?

    The treated area may:

    Become red or slightly swollen

    Form a blister

    Darken

Develop a small scab or crust

This is completely normal and part of the healing process.

The lesion will gradually dry up and naturally fall away as the skin heals underneath.

  • How long does healing take?

Healing varies depending on the lesion and the area treated.

    Typical healing times:

    Small lesions: around 1–2 weeks

Larger lesions: up to 3–6 weeks

The new skin may initially appear pink before settling.

  • Will I scar?

Cryotherapy is designed to minimise damage to surrounding skin and generally heals very well.

However, as with any skin treatment, there is always a small risk of:

    Temporary redness

    Pigment changes

    Mild textural change

    Scarring (rare)

Following aftercare correctly helps reduce risks.

  • Can I wear makeup afterwards?

If the treated area is on the face, it is best to avoid makeup directly over the area for the first 24 hours where possible.

  • Can I go in the sun afterwards?

You should avoid excessive sun exposure during healing and use SPF 50 daily on treated areas.

This is especially important for pigmented lesions to help prevent pigmentation changes.

  • How many treatments will I need?

Many lesions respond well in a single session.

However, some larger or deeper lesions may require additional treatments for best results.

  • Can all moles be treated?

    No.

Suspicious or undiagnosed lesions cannot be treated cosmetically.

If there is any uncertainty, you may be asked to obtain medical screening before treatment.

  • Is Cryotherapy safe?

Cryotherapy is a well-established treatment that has been used for many years to treat benign skin lesions.

At Jax-Glam Beauty, treatments are carried out using professional cryotherapy equipment in a clean, private salon environment.

  • Do you treat skin cancer?

    No.

I am not a doctor and cannot diagnose or treat skin cancer.

Any suspicious lesions should always be checked by a medical professional.

  • Where are you based?

Appointments take place at my private 1-to-1 beauty studio in Lyde Green, Bristol (BS16), South Gloucestershire — near Kingswood and Downend with easy access from the M32/M4.

  • Can I drive home afterwards?

Yes. Cryotherapy is a quick treatment and you can drive home and continue normal daily activities immediately afterwards.

  • Can I have more than one lesion treated?

Yes. Multiple lesions can usually be treated during the same appointment if appropriate. Additional lesion charges apply, and I'll discuss this with you during your consultation.
